CDR Maguire was retained as the prime architect to assist in repair cost estimates, as well as leading the resulting design team, during renovations on the East Somerville Community School.
During the early morning of December 9, 2007, a fire swept through the school’s southeast wing, resulting in significant damage. Working with the city, Somerville Public Schools, and the Massachusetts School Board Association, CDR Maguire designed renovations and additions that included administrative offices, general and special education classrooms, a cafeteria, a full-sized gymnasium, a state-of-the-art auditorium seating 300+, a media center, music suites, science laboratories, computer rooms, and a technology suite.
Through energy conservation measures such as daylight harvesting, sunshade systems, working gardens, and a live green roof, the school aims to achieve MA CHPS Verified and LEED for School Certifications. CDR Maguire led the design with the latest Building Information Modeling (BIM), which resulted in efficient presentation, coordination, and collaboration throughout the process and a reduction in change order costs of 50%.
