As part of MassDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program, CDR Maguire provided conceptual design and construction phase services of 6 superstructure replacements and 2 full bridge replacements carrying I-90 over Flanders Road in Westborough, MA and over Parkerville, Cordaville, and Woodland Roads in Southborough for MassDOT District 3. CDR Maguire developed a Base Technical Concept package for MassDOT’s Acceler-8 I-90 Bridge Replacements that enabled the Design-Builder to replace each superstructure in just 56 hours over 8 weekends. Prior to the weekend work, the abutments were rehabilitated and in the case of the full replacement, constructed under the existing structures. In a series of 8 weekends, traffic was crossed over to the opposite barrel starting on Friday evening, maintaining 2 lanes of I-90 traffic in each direction. Then the existing bridges were demolished and prefabricated bridge elements were used to reconstruct the bridge seats and backwalls on the abutments and install a new bridge superstructure that could be re-opened to traffic by Monday morning.
