As part of MassDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program, CDR Maguire provided design and construction phase services to replace the existing 50’-10” steel stringer with cast-in-place concrete deck carrying Route 9 over the Stearns Reservoir Outlet. The existing bridge was replaced by a 90’ long rolled steel stringer bridge with composite deck and integral abutments. The new substructures were installed behind the existing substructures, which were cut and capped to serve as scour protection for the new foundations as well as to limit in-stream work. To reduce construction duration and impact to traffic, the new superstructure was constructed using Precast Bridge Units. The challenge for the design and construction was to maintain 4-lanes of traffic and pedestrian access during construction without widening outside the existing bridge footprint.
